“Is it possible to find anything more perfect than every piece in ‘Don Giovanni’? Richard Wagner: Oper und Drama

"Oh, how doubly dear and above all honour is Mozart to me that it was not possible for him to invent music for ‘Tito’ like that of ‘Don Giovanni,’ for ‘Cosi fan tutte’ like that of ‘Figaro’! How shamefully would it have desecrated music!" Richard Wagner: Oper und Drama

This year, Opera Australia will broadcast, for the first time, their CinemaLive opera relay in cinemas in  the UK and Ireland. Included will be their rather fine production of Don Giovanni. Below, is a full list of all operas in the season, the release from Opera Australia plus participating cinemas. I will attempt to provide international dates shortly. Alas, as yet, no news as to whether the Melbourne Ring will be broadcast next year.

Opera Australia and CinemaLive are excited to announce that Opera Australia’s 2012-13 cinema season will be delivered to the UK from the 24th April this year.

The series will consist of some of the world’s favourite operas including three of Puccini’s masterpieces; La bohème, Turandot and the exquisite Madama Butterfly, Mozart’s breathtaking Don Giovanni and Bizet’s captivating imaginings in The Pearlfishers. The series will also feature some ground-breaking new productions including Erick Korngold’s Die tote Stadt directed by the Oscar nominated film director; Bruce Beresford.

A highlight of the series will be Verdi’s La Traviata, on 31st July 2012, performed on a purpose-built, shimmering stage on the waters of The Sydney Harbour on a floating water-stage. The Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House will provide a magnificent backdrop to this unique production, complete with fireworks – a glittering production, perfectly suited for the silver screen.

For those who don’t fancy travelling 10,000 miles to see the operas live, this series will provide UK audiences with an exciting opportunity to see world-class productions from the other side of the globe.

Artistic Director, Lyndon Terracini said of the launch, "I'm delighted that we now have the opportunity for opera lovers in the UK to be able to enjoy some of Opera Australia's most wonderful productions."
