When John Christie built Glyndebourne's original opera house, it was with the intention of making it Britain's Bayreuth - with an annual festival of Wagner's operas - beginning with Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. . Alas, it was quickly pointed out that the house was to small to house Wagner's demands for massive resources and instead Glyndebourne began to produce Mozart's more manageable operas. The rest, as they say, is history.
Indeed, it was not for more than a further 70 years or so that Glyndebourne - with its now much larger and rebuilt opera house - produced it's first Wagner opera: Tristan Und Isolde in 2003.
Move forward to 2011 and once again, Glyndebourne puts on it's most lavish Wagner production yet and broadcasts it to cinemas around the world: Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.
